Thank you.

It's the best teaching on this I've come across, though I've benefitted from Andrew Murray's Abide in Christ in the distant past.(More devotional in tone.) I've certainly not heard preaching along these lines -it's invariably been the "popular view."
I did however hear edifying preaching based on a chiastic structure to the passage, following on from "You are already clean..." The preacher had completed his Master's Degree from Durham Univ, on John's gospel.

Happy New Year Pastor Sam. I agree with you here. I'm also reminded The Parable of the Weeds in Matthew 13 and "the good tree bears good fruits" example in Matthew 7. In the church we have both weeds and wheats. They seem to"grow" together but when the time is here, the Lord will gather the weed and burn them. We'll recognise them by their fruits. The tree that doesn't bear good fruit will be thrown into fire. If one truly lives on and by Christ he/she will bear good fruits. May we continue to feed on Christ but nothing else in this new year!
